Festival Parade

21 - 23 August 2009

President's Report

Gooday All,

Well here we are with only three weeks to go 'til the 2009 Drovers Camp Festival and things are moving along very nicely this year. We have a few things to start off this year for our volunteers...on the 15th the Barkly Bike Challenge are having their function here that night which we are doing the bar for, then on the 19th we have the Queensland Variety Bash here for lunch (just 550 people) for which we are doing the catering and the bar. This is one way for us to make money for the Camp.

On the Thursday night we are having a Wine and Cheese Night to advertise our Art Show then the next day (21st) at 9.00am we have the registration of all the Drovers followed by their luncheon and then the Party begins down the street in the afternoon.

This year we have a $20 registration fee on the drovers due to all the price increases in the food lines. Hope this is favourable by all.

As you can see by this Cattle Pad it has been another sad few weeks, I just hope they are all droving once again in the higher pastures.

Well folks see you all on the 20th or the 21st of this month.
Yours in droving Liz

Bomber Stacey

Bomber Stacey

Bomber was born 19th February1942 in a white duck canvas tent under a bauhinia tree at Newcastle Waters NT. It was the day Darwin was bombed by the Japanese forces so he was naturally nicknamed Bomber. His parents christened him Leonard after a family friend Leonard McConville who was a supervisor of the Department of Interior, later called the Commonwealth Department of Works which is the equivalent of the Main Roads of Queensland.

Bomber grew up a very quiet and obedient kid, he was never a problem and never sick. Bomber went to school the Lady of Sacred Heart Convent in Alice Springs in 1949 and left school at the end of 1954. Bomber started work in 1955 at the age of 13 helping his brothers, Johnny and Kelly, run a droving plant which their father had left them. He had six straight years droving cattle through the Murranji and Barkly Tablelands. His longest trip he did was in 1956 when they took 1,500 bullocks from Victoria River Downs to Walgra Station Queensland (Urandangi) a distance of 800 miles—the trip taking 14 weeks.

He then worked for MIM for a year or so and then driving road trains for many years while based in Katherine. It was here were he and his wife bought a home and raised a family.

Bomber was a man who always looked after his mates - he would go out his way to say hello and help them if in need. He loved to reminisce and could always see the funny side of things.

Bomber is gone now but will never be forgotten, Johnny can still see him riding beside him at 13 years of age on his favourite horse “Rainbow” only 4 feet in height, a 10 gallon hat (3 sizes too big) pulled over his eyes and a pair size 8 boots curled up at the toes and a smile from ear to ear.

Bomber passed away on the 9th June, 2009 in Mount Isa.

Drovers Ball

Ray Fryer has donated two beautiful sawn wood slabs. We would like to offer people the opportunity to have their brand (or if you have an old brand from your family) burnt onto a slab for permanent display in the memorial. $150 per brand will be charged with the proceeds going towards running expenses for the Drover's Camp. Bring your brands to the festival in August and leave your mark on the Drover's Camp!
