CATTLE PADS

The official newsletter of The Drover's Camp Assn Inc. Camooweal

VOL # 6 Issue 2 June 2009

President's Report

G'day All,

Sorry for the delay with this Cattle Pad but have been to Brisbane with a girl who used to work for us who is very sick. All is OK at the moment.

The festival is fast approaching, don't forget the dates 21st - 23rd August 2009. Once again the town is booked out so if you know anyone coming and hasn't booked tell them to bring their swag.

This year we were not successful with Festivals of Australia so Tom Maxwell (who will be here) and I are very busy trying to find entertainment within our budget. Will do another Cattle Pad before the Festival so will let you know who we will be having then.

What a sad year this has been, loosing Ian Tinney, Marie Mahood and Bomber Stacey (his eulogy will be in the next Cattle Pad) all to greener pastures up high...my prayers and thoughts go to all their families. At this present time Keithie O'Keeffe is in hospital and not doing so well, I wish him good health.

Memberships are due at the end of this month, just $25.00 for those of us that are not life members.

Well folks will do another in two weeks , 'til then
Yours in droving Liz

CALLING ALL BRAND OWNERS

Ray Fryer has donated two beautiful sawn wood slabs. We would like to offer people the opportunity to have their brand (or if you have an old brand from your family) burnt onto a slab for permanent display in the memorial. $150 per brand will be charged with the proceeds going towards running expenses for the Drover's Camp. Bring your brands to the festival in August and leave your mark on the Drover's Camp!

MARIE MAHOOD
09/05/26 - 09/03/09

Well known rural resident and author, Marie Mahood died on 9th March, and her funeral was held in Mackay on the 18th of March, 2009. Marie wrote a number of books, the best known of which is probably "Icing on the Damper". She and her husband Joe, battled away on "Mongrel Downs" station in the Northern Territory's Tanami, before moving to "Cattle Camp", in central Queensland, where Joe was tragically killed in a helicopter mustering accident some years ago. The bush has lost another character.

R.I.P.

Ian Tinney
24/07/48 - 09/05/09
Foundation Member of The Drover's Camp

Sadly I must notify the Drover's Camp members of the death of Ian Tinney in Toowoomba on the 9th of May, 2009. Ian was a Foundation Life Member of the association.

His working career was spent with the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC), firstly as a radio technician and in the mid nineties as station manager of ABC, Longreach. After retiring from the ABC he moved to Crows Nest where he joined the Rural Fire Brigade. He designed new computer fire maps and installed a new radio communication system which has been adapted by other brigades. He was working up to the time of his death on a new mobile aerial to ensure communication amongst fire crews during phone blackouts. Generous with his time and computer skills he helped me in producing my book and co authored "Where the Dead Men Lie" with Bruce Simpson.

Ian had no close family members still alive, but will be sorely missed by his friends in the West, the ABC, Rural Fire Brigade, Drovers Camp and by Bruce, myself and Greg.
Regards J. F. Simpson
